Prof. P.P. Thomas (Parayil Pothan Thoamas), popularly known as "PP Appachan" or even "Appachan", among the Kerala UESI community, was a man of the Word
and deed.
He had his eternal home-call by 1.00 AM today. He finished his earthly race at the age of 91. (The funeral is
likely to be on the 30th Monday afternoon at Emmanuel Mar Thoma Church,
Eraviperoor, near Tiruvalla.
Prof. P. P. Thfomas had formal training in various disciplines- Philosophy, Psychology, English Literature and Theology. He began his career in North India as a teacher at the Nepali Bible School. Later as Lecturer in Psychology and in English Literature, retiring from the Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla, gave him ample opportunities to love students and associate with them intimately. He was a friend, a teacher a good listener and counselor to them and to anyone who came across him.
I first met “PP Appachan” on the last week of December in 1985 at Malapparambu, Calicut during the North Kerala EGF gathering. This was after my masters while I was also considering stepping out for Christian service. I vividly remember his talk on Christian Home comparing the three Hs: Hostel, Hospital and Home. It interested me very much! “Food and stay is available at Hostel; at Hospital and also at the Home. But Home is different”. He continued expounding on Christian home in comparison with any other homes. I had several interactions with him during 1986-2004 and each of those conversations are memorable.

I have observed him several times meeting up in a group of three at the residence of Late Mr. Jacob Kurian, discussing and studying Christian counseling which eventually led to the formation of Grace Counseling.
In 1987 once at a UESI bookstall he was seated as the book ambassador, helping young people and students choose books. When he suggested, they just bought it. That was his credibility. When I wanted to choose between a one-volume Commentary and a Concordance, he recommended, “If you want to study what others have studied buy the commentary; If you want to study yourself, chose the Concordance” It really opened my inner eyes. That’s the reason I still enjoy studying, teaching and preaching by expositions without actually referring to any commentaries though I have some on shelf.

I present this as a tribute with a few insertions
about him that I received from my friends. You are free to add more at the Comments (that I
will try to add on)
His last heard voice as recorded goes: “Do the Word; that is
what we are expected to do; Do we do it ?” (captured by Sujoy Jacob (UESI Kerala Staff on 20th September).
"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I
have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day:
and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing". 2
Tim. 4:7-8(KJV) Shared by Prof. John Zachariah
about him.
“Appachan is the Appachan of the UESI Kerala Family. I met him
for the first time at the Consultative Conference at Charalkunnu. I still
remember him announcing about books that we should read. I started respecting
and loving him. Then lot of occasions of learning - receiving his teaching,
travelling, committees, attending Inductive Bible Study seminars, discussing
doctrines. Appachan was great resource of UESI,true friend of all inspite of
age differences, great teacher who could implant interest to read and learn, a
great counselor, a man of small intriguing questions and good humor…. Praising
God for such a great man of God”

“He was my mother's class mate. I used to stay in his room in
almost all EU camps. A man with a real sense of humor. His voice 'TV' still
sounds in my ears”
- Prof. T. V. Alexander.
"PP Appachen lived life well and that too to its fullness. Praise God for such lives that have been totally abandoned into the hands of his LORD and Master till the very last breath. He was a faithful student of God's Word and lived by it and encouraged others to not only be hearers of the Word but doers of it. He couldn't be any less emphatic with what he was fully engaged with till his last conscious moment. (Thank God we have the audio recording as real evidence for his own statement.)

He
was a guru who became my friend, and influenced me a lot. A man so passionate for the Lord and His Word.
I will never forget the discussions on Biblical perspectives I had with him at
his house in Puramattom.
He
led such a simple life and yet was firm and profound in wisdom through intimacy
with God and years of passionate reading and discourses. He spent a large share
of his income on books/literature. He not only studied them but also be keen to
share precious literature, sometimes at his own expense. He gave his all for
His kingdom, and satisfied himself with a humble morsel of food. His house has
no extravaganza. I never found him angry
or agitated or complaining or gossiping. What a role model!! He
introduced to me the Inductive Bible study and several good expositors. He was
very specific on his words. In his late 80’s he mastered the art of
"Whatsapp-ing" and resorted to sharing the WORD through pieces of
literature every day to as many as he could, until he was hospitalized.

DeleteFirst I met him as a teacher of IBS for my GSTP in 1993. Then I understood how passionate he is. I cherish him as a person of:
ReplyDelete1. Straight forward. He won't mind sharing his views of even if everyone else has a different opinion.
2. Good command in language. He expected every student, staff and graduate to come to that level.
3. Word of God. He always used to say, Bible study is work...Bible study works. He popularised IBS among Eu. Egf in Kerala
4. Good Reading. He reads a lot and encouraged people to read. Many books in uesi Kerala library is his contribution.
5. Ahead of his contemporaries. His reading and involvement in social media made him contemporary. While his contemporaries are in Stone age, he was in iron or bronze age.
6. Person of Mission: He allowed his daughter to be a staff Worker of Uesi Kerala.
There is no one in Uesi Kerala to replace his gap. As a community we should strive to be the people of the Word, good readers of books, command in language, passion for mission and finally being contemporary and advance in thinking and reflecting. Rajesh George, HIGHFIELD. UESI CONFERENCE CENTRE,KOTAGIRI

ReplyDelete*A life worth lived*
ReplyDeleteI first met appachan at a night vigil in Alappuzha as a student. The way he spoke to each of the student over there was so loving. There was no hesitation to talk to him whenever we met him in a camp or conference. It was a joy talking to him. His love for the word of God and it's exposition was so inspiring. He always encouraged to practice the IBS. Using the social media to connect with people was amazing even in that age. Remembering the last visit that Philip, my college mate and ex. EU staff and myself had with him. We informed him our visit through whatsapp. As soon as we reached his house he had two books in his hands to gift us. The very first thing he did was to handover the book to us and a short brief of the books. I had the experience of having received one book during every visit. He also adviced us "if you have read it, do not keep it in the shelves but pass on".
A loss for the UESI ministry. Thanking the Lord for the life and ministry of appachan.
We shall meet him at the glorious shore.
P p Apachen ....wonderful man of God...samupadeshi,SAMARITANS HAND INDIA
ReplyDeletePraise God for Appachen's life.
ReplyDelete"If you have six subjects to study, study seven subjects; study Bible as seventh subject and study the seventh subject first" PP Appachen in UESI State Conference at Adoor in 1999.
Appachen used to encourage me about my articles and comments and even he would correct me. If someone points a mistake, he would say sorry for being wrong. One of his short and sweet quote to me is "Better late. Bitter never".
Let us carry on the love and model he has shown us.
Precise, sharp memories!
